Welcome

The Byron Peter Foundation for Hope, Inc. is a non-profit foundation formed to honor the life of Byron Peter Harrington II, a young man who, in 2001, tragically took his own life.

The reasons for his actions remain a mystery, but his family would like Byron Peter to be remembered for the good things he did in his short life, and they are many.

Byron Peter embraced others with an open mind and an open heart. He inspired all who met him and knew him with his caring, his understanding and his love for family and friends.

The Foundation's mission is to honor Byron Peter's life by trying to inspire troubled young people with HOPE for a strong future. We will strive to provide opportunities of hope for at-risk youth, including those at risk due to depression, illegal drug use, or possible suicide.

The Byron Peter Foundation for Hope was founded by Marilynn Hammond in memory of her son , Byron Peter Harrington II, who tragically took his own life at age twenty-nine.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death of young men, and the eighth leading cause of death for males. Males ages 15 to 24 are six times more likely to take their own life than females that age.

The reasons for his actions will forever be a mystery, but Byron's family would like to turn their grief into action. They would like him to be remembered for the good things he did in his short life.

Byron inspired many with his understanding and love for family, friends, and even casual acquaintances. So it is fitting that the mission of the Byron Peter Foundation for Hope is to inspire troubled young people with hope for a strong future.

With that goal in mind, the Foundation's first project was to build the Byron Peter Cabin at a camp & retreat facility located in Pascoag, Rhode Island, and to establish a Camp Scholarship Fund that will be used to provide financial assistance for troubled young people who might benefit from the supportive environment at the camp.

The Byron Peter Cabin was completed in March 2005, and now other projects to help young people are currently being funded with Byron Peter Foundation for Hope monies.

    Byron Peter Cabin
In an effort to fulfill the mission of the Byron Peter Foundation for Hope -- to inspire troubled young people with hope for a strong future -- the Foundation's first project was to build a new cabin, called the Byron Peter Cabin, at the Episcopal Conference Center, a camp and retreat facility located in Pascoag, Rhode Island.

Byron and his sister, Phoebe, and brother, Seth, spent happy days at the ECC Camp, whose aim is to enhance the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of young people.

A number of professional contractors, carpenters, roofers, and electricians agreed to volunteer their labor and expertise, and groundbreaking began in November 2004. The goal was to raise funds of for the cost of materials only for building the cabin, estimated at $22,000-$25,000.

In March of 2005 the Byron peter Cabin was completed and is now used for weekend retreats throughout the fall, winter and spring by campers, and provides housing for camp staff during the regular summer season.

  • Camp Scholarship Fund
In addition to building the cabin, the Foundation has also established a Camp Scholarship Fund to provide financial assistance for troubled young people who might benefit from the supportive environment at the camp.

We hope that you will support the Scholarship Fund and other Byron Peter Foundation projects http://bigbropoker.org by purchasing a
raffle ticket or by making a monetary donation. Your generosity will go a long way towards providing hope for a strong future to a special young person.

Other ways to help ...

  • Honor Gifts
Gifts made in honor of a special occasion -- such as a birthday, wedding or anniversary -- are an excellent way to recognize the achievement while helping to support the work of the Byron Peter Foundation for Hope. We will be pleased to assist you in making the happy event more meaningful by notifying the honoree of your thoughtful act.

  • Memorial Gifts
One of the most meaningful ways to acknowledge the passing of a loved one is by offering a gift as a tribute to a life lived. Many families include a request for memorial gifts as part of the newspaper obituary, and individuals make gifts in memory of their loved ones on birthdays or to mark the anniversary of their passing. A listing of the donors' names and addresses (but not the gift amount) is provided to the deceased's next of kin so that acknowledgments may be made.
